What do we mean when we say this? We say it all the time, almost like it’s second nature. But where do we think our trash goes? It was when I lived in NYC, I first began to wonder about this, seeing the piles of trash, sometimes over a meter tall in the streets, on every street corner on collection day. The smell of it humming in the air on the hot summer nights, the bin juice, trickling its way off the steel edged curbs into the hot tarmac. I’d see the barges floating down the East River on their way to New Jersey as I was riding my way to work in the mornings. They’d meander peacefully along, filled with tons of shit no one wanted anymore. Where did it all go? Incinerated? Into the ground to create a new rolling hill city park, affording wonderful views of the city that created the waste you’re stood upon. But we all do it, we just put it in a bag, pop it out front, and forget about it.
O que significa isso? Nós falamos o tempo todo, quase de forma natural, mas para onde vai mesmo nosso lixo? Foi quando morei em NYC que comecei a pensar sobre isso vendo pilhas de lixo ás vezes de mais de um metro de altura nas ruas e em cada canto da cidade em dias de coleta. O cheiro forte no ar nas noites quentes de verão, aquela substância líquida escorrendo do container diretamente no asfalto. Eu costumava ver as balsas com lixo flutuando no East River no meu caminho para New Jersey quando pedalava para meu trabalho todas as manhãs boiando pacificamente coberta de toneladas de coisas que não queríamos mais. Para onde vai tudo isso? Incinerado? Enterrado para criar morrinhos em um novo parque, permitindo uma vista maravilhosa da cidade que criou todo esse lixo. Mas todos nós sabemos para onde vai. Só colocamos tudo em um saco em frente ao nosso portão e não se fala mais nisso.

Living on the farm, Tati and I have found our trash solutions to be a little lacking. We get collection here, once, twice or never a week. The schedule is typically Brazilian, and the loose dogs or stray cats will make light work of your trash bag should the collection not arrive, and you forget to bring it back in. Probably because you’ve been back to back watching stranger things and it’s now midnight and you’re in your underpants and you can get fucked if you think I’m walking out there to get the garbage.
Morando na fazenda, Tati e eu nos deparamos com condições precárias para lidar com nosso lixo. A coleta acontece por aqui uma ou duas vezes na semana, às vezes nem acontece. A programação é bem irregular e os cachorros e gatos de rua dão um jeito no saco de lixo em dias que os coletores não passam e esquecemos de trazer de volta pra dentro. Provavelmente porque estamos assistindo Stranger Things, já é meia noite e estou de pijamas bem puto só de pensar em ir até o portão trazer o lixo de volta
So we find ways of reducing our trash to as little as possible. Or at least, the things we need to “throw out”. This is something we all can do to some extent, and every little bit helps, and every little bit helps us feel like we’re doing our bit.
Então temos buscados alternativas para reduzir nosso lixo para o mínimo possível, ou ao menos, reduzir o número de coisas que “jogamos fora”. Isso é algo que todos podemos fazer até certo ponto, e cada pouco já é de grande ajuda.

We’ve removed meat from our daily diets, for almost a year now, on the farm, we’ve been vegetarian. This removed the amount of food packaging we initially bring into the house, and the amount we throw out. It also means, any scraps we have, can be composted. This, in turn gives us wonderfully rich compost to help us grow our veggies and our leafy greens in the coming months.
Nós tiramos carne do nosso cardápio diário aqui em casa, quase completando um ano de dieta vegetariana. Isso reduziu bastante o lixo que não podíamos reaproveitar porque o resto dos nossos alimentos vão para compostagem. Usamos o composto para plantar nossos vegetais e hortaliças.
Don’t worry, the furballs are still carnivores, but thankfully the only waste they produce goes chalky white if not eaten by foxes before I normally find it. Gross, right?
Não se preocupe, pois nossos peludos ainda são carnívoros e ainda bem que o único lixo que eles produzem se desintegra quando não comido por raposas antes de encontrarmos. Nojento, não?

We don’t receive mail here, we can’t actually, so that removes junk mail and parcel packaging from the equation. There is no need to receive bills or anything via the post, so go paperless where you can. What we do need to buy, we buy and bring ourselves, without the use of plastic bags. Any paper packaging we have, we use to get the wood oven burning, or to warm the house with our wood burning stove on the chilly evenings. Yes, it can get chilly out here in Brazil!
Não recebemos correspondências aqui, na verdade os Correios não acharam o caminho ainda, então isso já tira da lista papéis, folhetos e propagandas. Não há necessidade de recebemos as contas via Correios. Tente eliminar isso se possível. O que precisamos comprar tentamos sempre retirar nós mesmos evitando uso de sacos plásticos. Qualquer embalagem de papel nós usamos para acender o forno à lenha ou esquentar a casa na nossa salamandra em noites frias. Sim, também faz frio por aqui.

We don’t buy what we don’t need and generally speaking, we don’t need most things. This is huge, and this is probably where I have been most guilty of creating waste in the past, and this is where we could all do better. Just take a look back at your Amazon purchases, for example, there’s a lot of shit there, right? A lot of stuff gathering dust and a lot of stuff we have no idea where it is anymore..
Não compramos o que não precisamos e falando genericamente não precisamos de muitas coisas. Isso é importante e provavelmente o ponto que me traz mais culpa por ter criado tantos resíduos no passado e é aí que todos nós podemos melhoras. Dê uma olhadinha no histórico de compras na Amazon, por exemplo. Um monte de porcaria, certo? Muita coisa acumulando poeira e muita coisa que nem sabemos mais onde estão.

Things are super expensive here in Brazil. Imported items even more so, take a mobile phone. In the US, I’d get a new one every year or every other year, just because I could. Not because my old one no longer worked or served me well. But you’d pay 4x the amount you would in the US or the UK for the same device.. So you learn to love the one you have, even if it takes shitty photos and sometimes drops calls. This applies to just about every material possession we have. I used to buy T shirts like toilet paper, sometimes a different colour of the same design, this contributes to all kinds of heart wrenching industries, all kinds of unsustainable farming, labour and a carbon footprint to boot. I’m not saying I don’t care about looking good anymore, but we can learn to do more, with less. I also look like shit.
As coisas são bem caras aqui no Brasil. Importados então ainda mais. Um celular, por exemplo, em US eu trocaria todo ano só porque eu podia e não porque meu antigo parou de funcionar, mas aqui eu pagaria 4 vezes mais que em US ou UK pelo mesmo aparelho, então aprendi a gostar do que tenho mesmo quando tira fotos não tão boas ou quando a ligação cai. Isso se aplica para praticamente todos os bens que temos. Eu costumava comprar camisetas como compro papel higiênico. Ás vezes diferentes cores do mesmo modelo. Isso contribui para todos os tipos de indústrias desumanas, plantações de algodão nada sustentáveis, trabalho escravo e muita poluição. Não que eu não mais me importe em me vestir bem, mas podemos fazer mais com mesmo. Na verdade eu me visto muito mal.
Buy fresh, buy local and organic if possible
We have started making our own jams, nut butters, breads, cakes and we hand prepare all of our food, from scratch. We buy our ingredients from a weigh and pay or farmers market, and we take refillable jars. We restrict the amount we buy in the supermarket as best we can. We have begun making deodorant, scrubs, toothpaste and dish soaps and laundry detergent. Candles, furniture, lamps and even clothing. From stuff we already had, that no longer served us in its current state.
Nós começamos fazendo nossas próprias geléias, manteiga de castanhas, pães, bolos e preparamos à mão todos os nossos alimentos. Compramos nossos ingredientes a granel ou direto do produtor sempre levando nossas sacolas ou vidros reutilizáveis. Reduzimos nossas compras no supermercado ao mínimo possível. Começamos fazer nosso próprio desodorante, esfoliantes, creme dental, sabão, velas, móveis, luminárias e até mesmo roupas. Normalmente transformando coisas que já temos e não serviam mais.

Upcycling allows us all to use stuff we considered junk, and there are a million things online about it, using this old tyre for that, or that old pair of destroyed jeans for this.

The farm, has taught Tati and I so much in the last couple of years, and I do feel better for the small contribution we make in trying to make this place a little less scruffy. If we all made an effort to do one little alteration in our daily habits, our environment would thank us. Brazil has a lot more to learn too, there are zero incentives towards recycling, so its rare to find a location to recycle glass or plastics, this makes a diference elsewhere and certainly reduces the amounts going to landfill/incineration.
Morar aqui tem nos ensinado muito nos últimos anos, e eu me sinto melhor contribuindo mesmo que de forma pequena para melhorar um pouquinho esse lugar. Se nos esforçarmos para fazer pequenas alterações em nossos hábitos diários a natureza agradecerá. Brasil tem muito que aprender também. Tem pouco incentivo para reciclagem e não é fácil encontrar pontos de coleta se vc está fora dos grandes centros.
It has to be said, simple living, is far from simple. Reducing waste is not easy, it takes planning, sacrifices and a fair bit of work, but if we incorporate some small changes in our daily lives, we can all make a big difference.
Precisa ser dito, viver simples está longe de ser simples. Reduzir lixo não é fácil. Precisa de planejamento, sacrifícios e muito trabalho, mas se incorporarmos pequenas mudanças no nosso dia a dia podemos fazer uma grande diferença
Right now, we produce a little less than a bag of trash a week, and some glass bottles. We could do a lot better and we will strive to get there.
Hoje em dia produzimos pouco menos de 1 saco de lixo por semana, e algumas garrafas. Podemos melhor muito e vamos lutar para chegar lá
